by Brooke Tallman-Birkett (Producer/Stage Manager for Heathers The Musical) Greetings and salutations! When selecting the premier show for Bold Theatrics, Heathers The Musical seemed to us like a no-brainer. The serious subject matter, masked in musical numbers and crude humor, fit perfectly with our passion for providing theatrical experiences that will leave the audience discussing the material long after the curtain closes.
I became a fan of Heathers a year or two after the film was released in 1988, at a sleepover (I would not have been allowed to watch it at home). As a pre-teen, I may not have understood everything I was seeing, but even then I loved the way the movie presented a perfectly conflicted anti-hero in Veronica. Revisiting Heathers as an adult, my love has only grown (as has my gratefulness for no longer being in high school). Veronica craves love and acceptance. Who she is, and what she is capable of becoming is put to the ultimate test when she finally receives what she desires. Heathers The Musical keeps the original integrity of the cult classic. The subjects addressed may be uncomfortable to discuss, but as JD says, "the extreme always makes an impression."
